Men of the club organised a fun day for the Annual Ladies Day at the clubhouse. It started with the ladies going for a short-timed drive around the Mudgeeraba area.
After morning tea, there were various driving skill tests and a horseshoe throwing contest. This was followed by a delicious BBQ lunch cooked by the gents but organised by Leonie Butcher-Brown.
Twenty-four people attended in fourteen cars. After a tie with Leonie Butcher-Brown in the horseshoe tossing competition, the eventual winner was Carol Law after a throw off. Carol was the recipient of a Coles Gift Card.
The champion lady driver is Kerena Crediton in her Toyota Cressida. Thanks to the guys for organising the day and pampering the ladies. It was a very entertaining day & great to see the ladies driving the cars. That was the original purpose of holding the Ladies Day back in 1995.
Tugun Desalination Plant Tour – September 2019
Wednesday 25th September
For the Mid-week run on 25th September, 26 club members visited the Gold Coast Desalination Plant at Tugun. Some members assembled at the clubhouse and drove through Varsity Lakes and Burleigh Heads to be joined by more members at the Desalination Plant.
It was a very interesting and informative morning. It was learnt that the plant always operates in standby mode which is 33% capacity or 133 million litres a day. It can reach 100% capacity in 72 hours in any emergency such as floods. It supplements the SEQ Water Grid during times of drought or during maintenance. If it was decommissioned completely it would take 12 months to get it to full capacity again.
The plant operates using reverse osmosis to remove the salt and minerals from the seawater. The intake and outlet structures are located out to sea and have become artificial reefs and home to a variety of small plants and sea animals. The plant is situated in an ideal spot as it is so close to the Pacific Ocean.
After the plant tour, the club members went to Tony’s Chinese Restaurant at Tugun Rugby Leagues Club for lunch. A very informative and enjoyable day which was being organised by the late Don MacTaggart before his sad sudden passing.

From there the club visited the main fire station for the Gold Coast at Southport. Jon, the Fire Station Officer gave the club a good talk on the facilities and three of the different types of fire trucks, where they opened up everything showing the equipment they carry and explaining the uses of the equipment. Sunday Combined Run with Gold Coast MG & Automobile Restorers Clubs – February 2019
Sunday 24th February
GCAAC hosted the Combined Run with Gold Coast MG Club & Automobile Restorers Club. Even though there were intermittent showers, 40 members of the combined clubs assembled in 26 cars at the clubhouse for the 9 AM start. Travelling towards the scenic Springbrook area, we could see where all the millions of dollars were spent repairing the recently reopened Mudgeeraba Springbrook Road at Neranwood. The after-effects of Cyclone Debbie.
Travelling on Nerang-Murwillumbah Rd through Numinbah, the morning tea stop was at Bochow Park at Natural Bridge. Morning tea was interrupted by a quick shower when everyone dashed for their cars. Especially the MGs owners with their hoods down.
Continuing along the Nerang-Murwillumbah Rd, the cars then headed south through Chillingham & Crystal Creek to Kyogle Road. Skirting around Uki, the cars travelled through Stokers Siding and onto Tweed Valley Way. After passing through Mooball and then turned onto Wooyung Rd to go to Pottsville Tavern for a delicious lunch.
A special mention to the late John Talbot for organising a very enjoyable day.

Coolangatta State School 100 Years Celebrations – February 2019
Saturday 9th February
The club was invited to take part in Coolangatta State School Centenary Celebrations. Seven cars and passengers assembled at the clubhouse at midday and meandered on a scenic drive through Bonogin, Tallebudgera and Currumbin Valleys and along the coast to the school situated at Miles St, Kirra. On our arrival at 1.30pm, we were met by three more of our club cars from the southern suburbs.
The school was opened in February 1919, as the border gates to Tweed Heads were shut because of the Spanish Influenza epidemic. As there was no school in Coolangatta, this left 70 children without a place of education. The original school was built on top of Kirra Hill and the first principal was Claude de Jersey who is grandfather of our current Governor, Paul de Jersey.
A fete was held as part of the celebrations with lots of stalls and entertainment by Hawaiian dancers and a skydiver dropped in on the oval. Our ten cars on display were a great attraction and admired by many people.
